Jonah is based on a Romanian text from the 70’s exploring Jonah’s solitude in the whale. The text has a strong subtext of political dissidence, but can be interpreted as a reaction to the isolation and powerlessness that any kind of oppressive system may exercise on the individual, whether it’s a social group, religion, state or media.
A group of women speak out the text as a chorus, creating a musicality that explores language as sound and metaphor.
